Dental Implants

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of biocompatible materials, typically titanium, that are surgically placed into the jawbone to support replacement teeth or dental prostheses such as crowns, bridges, or dentures. Here is a detailed overview:

Benefits of Dental Implants:

Procedure:

Initial Consultation and Evaluation:

  • Examination: A dentist or oral surgeon examines your mouth, takes X-rays, and possibly 3D images to assess the jawbone’s condition and plan the implant placement.
  • Treatment Planning: A detailed plan is developed, considering the number of teeth to be replaced and the condition of the jawbone.

Implant Placement Surgery:

  • Anesthesia: Local anesthesia or sedation is used to ensure comfort during the procedure.
  • Surgical Placement: The dentist or oral surgeon makes an incision in the gum to expose the jawbone and drills a hole to place the implant fixture. The gum is then stitched back over the implant.
  • Healing Period: The jawbone needs time to heal and integrate with the implant through a process called osseointegration, which typically takes several months.

Abutment Placement:

  • Minor Surgery: After the healing period, a minor surgery is performed to place the abutment on top of the implant fixture. The gum tissue is allowed to heal around the abutment.

Placement of Prosthesis:

  • Impressions: Impressions of the mouth are taken to create the custom prosthesis.
  • Attachment: The prosthesis (crown, bridge, or denture) is attached to the abutment, completing the process.
