Dental Crowns

What are crowns?

A dental crown, often referred to as a “cap,” is a restorative dental treatment designed to cover or encase a damaged or decayed tooth. Crowns restore the tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance, providing both functional and aesthetic benefits.

We Offer Same-Day Crowns!

We know the inconvenience of scheduling two appointments and wearing temporary crowns. This is why we offer same-day crowns in office.

Procedure for Getting a Dental Crown:

Initial Consultation

Examination and Diagnosis: The dentist examines the tooth and takes X-rays to assess the extent of damage or decay.

Tooth Preperation

Shaping the Tooth: The dentist reshapes the tooth by removing a portion of the outer structure to make room for the crown.

Impressions/Scanning: An impression or scan is taken of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth is taken to create a custom crown.

Temporary Crown Placement: A temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it while the permanent crown is being fabricated. We offer same-day crowns, so this is only necessary in specific cases.

Permanent Crown Placement

Fitting: Once the permanent crown is ready, the permanent one is fitted, adjusted, and checked for proper bite and alignment.

Cementation: The crown is then cemented onto the tooth with dental adhesive.

Crown Materials:

  • Porcelain or Ceramic: These crowns are popular for their natural appearance, as they can be color-matched to your existing teeth. Ideal for front teeth.
  • Metal: Made from gold alloy, nickel, or chromium, metal crowns are highly durable and withstand biting and chewing forces well. Often used for molars.
  • Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM): These crowns combine the aesthetics of porcelain with the strength of metal. The metal provides durability, while the porcelain offers a natural look.
  • Zirconia: Known for their strength and aesthetics, zirconia crowns are a durable option that can be used in both front and back teeth.
